37 Weeks - 2 little victories

Ever since school ended, my days are pretty much the same:
I update my to-do list,
do a couple things on it (which are mostly via phone calls or online),
spot clean some areas around the house,
sit outside on the patio and do some Pinteresting or FaceTiming while I watch Jake play,
maybe take a nap,
maybe work on a craft or organizational project,
make dinner,
take Jake to the dog park and/or swimming after 7 once it drops into the 80s,
and then get ready for bed...
but I'm so uncomfortable that I can't go to sleep, so I end up going to bed really late
and then waking up late, often with a headache.

And sometimes I even leave the house to go to Target or Walmart or something!

So while everyone is hastagging their summer travel of 2014, I barely leave the house because its always in the 90s and I'm like my own heater, who cannot travel due to pregnancy, Blaine's school, and lack of funds. But oh well. Worth it for my boy. Yesterday I even got Blaine on board for a Hawaiian trip summer 2015. We'll be living off loans anyways, so what does it even matter, right? ;)

As for a pregnancy update: I guess he's really running out of room because it is so hard for me to feel him. He does push up against me, but no big rolling over movements. When I get really worried I have Blaine lay behind me and try to feel him, and sometimes he feels things I don't. Lots of times recently I'll be freaking out all day and then finally at night time he'll finally reassure me that he's fine. Maybe he'll just be a relaxed baby that doesn't have to move all the time like his momma.

His stroller and carseat arrived last week. We tried to find a cute gender neutral color that wasn't too expensive and I consider this a W.

His rocker also arrived last week. My big splurge item that I wanted for his room was a beautiful and overly cushiony, comfortable upholstered rocker. I figured it would get a lot of use, last through several children, and then just be used as a lounge chair in our room or the living room. But I couldn't find very many options for that besides Pottery Barn Kids. So I couldn't test it out and it didn't have any reviews positive or negative, so when they went on sale and I got an email for an additional 10% off my first purchase, I went for it. It took like 8 weeks to get here and I was so excited... and so let down.

After all that money (which was a LOT) and waiting, I was so disappointed at how uncomfortable it was and how hard it was to rock in. So the very next day I called to return it. She asked for my reasons and she said she'd submit my request for approval. So she got back to me and said that I could get store credit, which I would end up wasting on things I didn't need or forgetting about it (which is what they'd hope for). So later that day I called back and talked to someone new and argued my case and demanded an appeal, so finally the lady submitted it for approval just this one time. (Who do they keep asking for approval? Let me talk to THAT guy). So anyways, she got back to be and said that they would refund my money!!! I was so excited and relieved and grateful. Mom taught me how to be firm but nice, which I believe I was. (However, if she would've called back with other news, I did have one last approach since I would've had nothing to lose... which probably made that sound a whole lot more dramatic than it was.) Anyhow, I was very proud of myself. I'm still waiting for them to schedule a pick up date and then refund my card, but they've already agreed to it so I'm happy.

With that money, I can now buy a cheaper, but good glider, the diaper bag I've been wanting, and my new camera lens. So this better get worked out before he gets here. Who knows when that will be?! He's due in less than 3 weeks now! Blaine keeps making fun of how proud I am of getting a refund, but its a big deal and not everyone would've fought for it. So now I tease him that he better watch his mouth or "I'll go all Pottery Barn" on him because "no one messes with momma" ;)

My other victory of the week was finding Jake a new vet. I hated the last one because of their insensitivity, lack of communication, and I felt like they were always taking advantage of me financially. So I definitely wanted to find a new one and he hadn't got his heart worm test yet, so I'd been asking around for recommendations and looking a lot online. I finally found someone that I felt good about and made an appointment for last Saturday morning when Blaine and I could both be there. Can I just say... my research and instincts paid off. I LOVE her (our new vet).

Long story short, "he's as healthy as a horse." And because it was a new place, Jake was really hyper and going nutso, but nothing we hadn't seen before. But it was good because she got to see that behavior and talk to us about some things. As you avid readers would know, I've been feeling really overwhelmed with how emotionally attached Jake is to me and how he will only throw fits and nip at me, but not Blaine (who's not home during the majority of the day). Especially because the baby is coming so soon.

Pretty much she said that he is a pack animal that needs that structure and order in his life. He see's Blaine as the alpha and not me, so when Blaine's gone, then Jake feels like he needs to be the alpha - not as a sign of disrespect or because he wants to, just because he needs there to be one and assumes its up to him. Which explains somethings that I didn't even tell her about. So we're going to invest in a couple of training sessions for him, which I have been working on today as well as part of my productivity. So while I do need to see him more as a dog and less as my child, he is still our big sweetie pie (weighing in at 83 pounds). As part of our daily routine, I am at the desk in the kitchen as we speak and he is taking a nap on the floor to the right by my feet. And today is his 9 month birthday! Which makes him 8 years old in human years.

Non-Stress Test

Yesterday was a little frightening. I hadn't felt him move very much in the past two and a half days. I had felt him at least once or twice on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, but I just felt like it wasn't nearly as much as usual or as strong.

I knew that the closer to delivery he is, the less room he has to move, but still thought it was a big change. I had talked to Blaine and my mom about how I'd been worrying and I kept going back and forth on whether or not to call the doctor or not.

But Tuesday afternoon I finally decided to just call because its better to air on the side of safety and if I hadn't, I'd still be worrying. So I called the doctor's office and said, "I'm 36 weeks pregnant and I feel like my baby's moved a lot less in the last 3 days..." Then the nurse cut me off and told me that I needed to go to the 5th floor of the hospital. So I was taken aback and asked why I couldn't just stop by the office and have them check on him in there and she said that when this happens, I'm supposed to go right to the hospital. "So go check in, I'll tell the doctor I sent you over and I'll let the hospital know you're on your way." So I went.

Blaine was in class and I didn't want to tell him unless something was wrong. So I tried calling my mom but she was at the beach, so next was Dad. So of course, he answers and jokingly gives me a hard time about how it must've been an accident to call him - which is when the tears finally came. So then he immediately softened into Dad/Grandpa mode and asked what was wrong. So I told him and he assured me that everything was probably fine and the doctors office probably just didn't want to disrupt the schedule with patients with appointments.

So I pulled myself together and went up to the 5th floor. They knew I was coming, so I immediately got a room and they hooked me up to some monitors with 2 bands over my tummy. I laid there for an hour and watched HGTV, pressing a button every time I felt him. They didn't tell me what it was, but when I talked to my mom afterwards she said it was a non-stress test.

So he's fine, and I don't regret going. I'm reassured of my babies health and strength and I had a nice trial run of what to do and where to go when he's ready to come! I just need to relax and lay down more so I can notice him more and help him relax. I do have my To-Do and To-Buy lists up on the wall, which I would like to complete within the next 2 weeks for the mot part. That way all the essentials will be ready by 38 weeks!

Quick story: We've felt a couple of little earthquakes since we've lived here (which is weird, since thats not what I expected from the plains), but Monday was the first time we had felt one while we were sleeping, which makes it extra scary. I guess it was a 4.2 where it hit. So anyways, the house starts shaking, which scares me and wakes me up, so I jump over onto Blaine and he wakes up thinking its time to go to the hospital

Father's Day

Yesterday was their 29th Anniversary, so we'll lead off with this picture. But check out that guy... looks the same as he does today. In fact, I bet he can do just as many pull ups as he could in high school - maybe more. He's my dad, and one of the best.
(I would say THE best, but now that Blaine's joining the Dad club, I think it'll be a tie)

Here's us at Disneyland - bonding from an early age

We've done many things together over the course of my 25 years with him and I will share just some.
But one of my fondest and earliest memories was when he took me to watch the Kansas City Royals for my first professional baseball game while we were living in Overland Park (probably around 3 or 4). It was a special daddy-daughter date - except in order to keep me on the date, he had to go buy me a new snack every inning. Oh, what a good time...

Except I don't remember any of it. It came up a couple years ago and he was so hurt that our special memory was only one sided... so now its a family joke. But I'm sure it was great at the time.

He has always been quite the talented athlete and has remained around sports his whole life, which is why his children are talented athletes who, too, enjoy sporting events. His mom (my grandma) always talks about how he was playing baseball at the park when he was really really young with all these older boys and a scout came up to her and was so impressed.

Growing up, he would take each of the kids on at least one business trip a year--and his business was sports, so I went to everything from crew meets in Boston to football games at Clemson, which doesn't even include all the Final Four basketball trips and Bowl Games over Christmas. It was always fun one-on-one time and I have a lot of special individual memories from each of them. Sometimes I quiz Dad to see if he remembers them as well. I have certainly enjoyed a privileged upbringing by being included on all these special experiences, many of which most people will never experience. And while we sometimes bought a souvenir, we mostly just brought back memories and pictures. Most of my older pictures are locked away on my broken laptop, so here's just a couple that I was able to track down.

Speaking of souvenirs, though, quick story:
I was on a trip to Washington D.C. with my dad when I was around 9 probably and the trip was coming to a close and he was complimenting me on how mature I was because I hadn't loved any of the souvenirs I'd seen so far, so I hadn't bought one. And probably mid-sentence of that praising, I decided that I had found my souvenir (since I couldn't come home empty handed). What was it you ask?

A t-shirt with a giant sunflower on it with a peace sign in the middle of it, that said "Washington D.C." underneath... Good choice, I know. It was on that same walk that we also bought some ice cream from a street vendor and then realized it was winter and that was a bad idea.

at Georgia's baseball field

Final Four in San Antonio

at the TCU @ Utah football game when he was in town representing the Orange Bowl Committee and he met Blaine for the first time (who hadn't shaved!)

the kids outside the Louisiana Superdome (went once with Miami, once with FAU)

The Coliseum at USC, where Miami practiced for the Rose Bowl

The Orange Bowl where Miami played all their regular season games in the good ole days

Louisiana Lafayette - home of the Ragin' Cajuns

after the Clemson game

Before the Stanford @ Notre Dame game in 2006. Even though we weren't affiliated with either team, Dad called one of his friends that worked at ND to get us tickets to the game because we loved Notre Dame that year because of Brady Quinn. Lots of fun memories from that trip, such as the bright yellow hummer dad got from the car rental lady, putting on tattoos at the tailgating party and Dad let me put one on his wrist, talking to Dad's friends wife about Brady Quinn and she saying how he would have no interest in a middle-aged black woman, Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija laying down in the back of a golf cart bed and riding right past us, and Alexis and I sharing a bed on silk sheets at his friend's house where we stayed and when they slid off in the middle of the night, Alexis woke me up to go pick the covers back up.

Dad also likes to travel and will look for a reason to do so. (And like me, he refuses to sit around and do nothing) So after I refused to go to Prom and Senior Night at Disney and all those other waste-of-money activities when I graduated from high school, he and I went on trip to London, England and Paris, France. We shared one hot chocolate a day, snacked on tropical flavored Starbursts, and only had real meals for dinner. But he let me choose all the musicals we went to and played along with my fun ideas, like when I got my face painted like a lion at the restaurant before we went to go see The Lion King. When we were on the tube from London to Paris, the waiter served us our drinks and instead of "merci" (or however you spell it), Dad instinctively resorted to his Spanish and said "gracias."

Here we are looking bored and less than amused at the Louvre. I really wanted to go after reading The Da Vinci Code, so we went and saw the Mona Lisa and a couple other famous things, but then agreed that our interests lie elsewhere... and quickly vacated. Probably to go enjoy another crepe.

Dad has also turned into a little shutterbug in the last couple of years. I would like to think that I influenced that. He especially loves it when the battery is dead or the card is full. Its "the bane of his existence."

Dad also enjoys a nice "goodie" and sometimes "cannot control the wheel" when driving past a shake place. He is the biggest fan of my big cookies and maintains that no one can quite make them like I do (a fair statement). He often tells me how he misses coming home from work and rounding the corner into the kitchen and seeing my chocolate chip cookies waiting for him in all their mounds of glory.

Dad and I also enjoy singing together and are family faves. In fact, he also just enjoys singing by himself. Like when we're on a family road trip and he has his headphones in and gets caught up in the moment and wants to belt it out, but only knows every 4th word, so he sort of skims over the rest of the words or tries to guess what they are supposed to be. From Joe to Wicked, he has become quite the musical man. Even though the extent of his musical background before Mom was this:

Dad and I also have a special relationship because I have a very soothing effect on him.
You laugh, but its true. Check out the comment on the right-hand side... my "calming spirit"

So calming, in fact, that it seems to put him to sleep lately

Dad enjoys my jokes, even when it makes him feel awkward, which then leads to his signature "embarrassed smile." But don't feel sorry for him-- he has embarrassed me at least once before - buying "serviets" without a shopping bag!!!

Fun fact: (by fun, I mean not fun at all) but I've been mistaken for my Dad's girlfriend SEVERAL times. A couple years ago we were all at a water park with my family and were in line for this big tube ride, so as many of us could fit got on the first tube and then just me and dad were left to go on the second one, so I said something like, "ready, Dad?" and I swear I was being normal but the whole time he teased me, "Oh sure. Make sure everyone knows that he's my dad, not just some old guy or boyfriend. 'Hey DAAAAAAD,' 'Here we go, DAAAAAAAAAAD'."

He's so cool in his Sugar Bowl letterman jacket. I would like to request that in the will...

He is also full of many quotes and instant church lessons that has supplied me with my own repertoire of teachings, such as:

-life's benchmarks

-when Alexis was sick and they wouldn't let her come on the family reunion cruise, so we all stayed behind with her --> Never leave your wingman

-"You can choose your choice, but you can't choose your consequence"

-"Fatigue makes cowards of us all"

-"Far better is it to dare mighty things and win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat"

Just this past Christmas he also taught me that "life is a waste of money." I, not unlike my mother, tend to be worried about finances and refused to be taken advantage of or waste money. So while I make a big stink about some things or take a stand to not buy something that I need because I feel it is overpriced, he insists that looking at it that way makes everything a waste of money and you can't live like that.

He also says that he's the smartest person in the world because he knows he doesn't know everything.

He also admits that he could never make it as a woman :)

Dad and I also enjoy a nice debate and being right, but never in a mean or angry way. In fact, it comes out more as funny, playful banter. So when Blaine says something I don't like or we get into some little argument, he says, "Come on, your dad would say that exact same thing and you never react like that with him!" To which I respond, "Well its just different with him!" :)

When interviewing for job a couple years ago, the owner asked me a couple of random questions that I didn't see the relevance of at the time. One of which was, "What is one of the most important things you've learned from your father?"

So the first thing I thought of was this: He treats everyone the same and encourages us to do so as well. No matter if they're a homeless person or the Queen of England. Plus, he's met tons of famous people, but treats them just like normal people, too. I have seen him literally give someone the shirt off his back. He treats everyone with respect and gives them the benefit of the doubt. A great example, but also annoying when I am complaining about Obama or a specific someone whom I particularly do not appreciate. Don't expect sympathy from Dad on that. He just tries to convince you that it's not a big deal, everyone has their own issues that we don't know about, maybe you just don't know them very well, just relax and don't let it get you so worked up. He once told me "You're not a garbage truck. You don't have to stop and pick up everyone's crap. Just keep driving. Not your problem. Like water off a duck's back."

He is also a great example of positivity. Life is certainly not fair, as we all know and as he has definitely experienced firsthand. But he doesn't complain or pout or feel sorry for himself. He is positive and level headed, which is why me and some other family members make up for his lack of explosion.

He's a great dad and I know he will be a fabulous grandpa, even though he insists that he won't be called "Grandpa" for a little while, because (to quote Father of the Bride Part II), "Grandfathers wear cardigans! I wear baseball caps and running shoes!" Very true, Dad. Very true.

For his 50th birthday, I made dad a video. Not just a 8 minute slideshow of pictures, but over an hour long worth of pictures, videos, inside jokes, voiceovers, etc. Even this appropriate clip from Modern Family, when Phil insists, "Look, I'm a cool dad. That's my thing. I text: LOL=laugh out loud, WTF=why the face? I know all the dances to high school musical, so..." Which was then followed big actual footage of Alivia and Dad dancing along with High School Musical 2. Can't wait to see him coach my little boy's football team! (Here's just a little preview of his HSM moves)

Ah, speaking of dance-- one last thing. He was also my assistant pom coach this past year while I was a first time coach of McLoud's Pom Squad. "Pom Pop" :) I'm joking but I'm also completely serious. We would have coaches meetings via cell phone to discuss how to properly handle different situations. My only regret is that he didn't get a team shirt.

Blaine's dad has also been a great friend and support to Blaine throughout his life and I'm glad and grateful that they have such a good relationship. Blaine often mentions how he misses just being in the woods with his Dad. They just like to talk and hike and wrestle around and lift. Blaine is his first born son and now Blaine's first born son is on the way! I especially love that Dave is excited to be a grandpa, as you should remember from a recent post about his new toy (big wheel) and why he keeps all of his elk horns.

Thats the "Dave" face in pictures

teaching Blaine how to fix the washing machine

And now the newest member of the Dad club: Blaine Baker. He's such a hot dad.

He's SO EXCITED. And loves holding babies and playing with kids. I was going through a bunch of pictures trying to track down some for this and I found tons of pictures of him and all my baby cousins. One of the big reasons he decided on the career that he did was that so he would have time to coach little league and go to lunch with his family. He is a good example of hard work and commitment. He is always honest. And he also has a good grasp on what he needs to improve on and always tries to do so because he wants to be a good example to his son. He loves him so much already and loves to feel him move around in my tummy and talk to him. While I'm more worried right now, he's definitely more excited and positive. He's been very supportive and has let me choose pretty much whatever I want for his room and stuff like that. Just one of the many ways that he loves me so much too ;) And while he's a big strong guy, like the picture below will show, he's also so so sweet.

Having Jake has also been a good preview to his dad skills, since they wrestle and play and just love each other. Blaine loves taking Jake on rides in the truck and to get an ice cream cone from McDonalds and introducing him to new things and watching his reaction. Just imagine once our baby boy is here!!! Blaine's going to be such a pushover... in the best way possible :)

Pregnancy Update - ONE MONTH LEFT!

Like I've mentioned, my most common pregnancy symptoms of the last couple weeks
(and presumably 5 more) are being super hot and super uncomfortable,
but in the last 2 weeks I also had a melt down about 2 new things:

1. I look so huge and I don't have any clothes that fit me
2. Jake is so emotionally dependent on me and it makes me feel guilty

Luckily I happened to be FaceTiming with my mom at the point of meltdown. So of course, best mother ever went to Target with Austin after we hung up and bought me a couple of maternity clothes and sent them to me.

Last time we talked about it, our sweet baby boy was expected to be around 8 lbs. I think I was just a little under that and I think Blaine was just a little over, but I feel like I look bigger than other pregnant people... specifically in pictures. I know I am very lucky to not have gotten cankles or fat fingers or anything, though.

As for Jakey, I've been pretty worried about having two baby boys under the age of 1. Maybe because its been super hot outside lately, but he has become even more clingy... which is sweet and loving, but also drives me crazy with guilt when I need to get things done or when I want him to go run and play in the backyard. Sometimes I'll go sit out on a lawn chair on the patio with the fan and just watch him explore the yard.

I'm sure he'll be super loving and attached to his new best friend (Baby Boy), but at first I'm worried he'll have only child syndrome. We ordered our stroller today, so we'll have to take him on a couple practice walks with the stroller. Also, we've left the baby's room open so its not some forbidden place that once he gets in, he'll go crazy. He's pretty used to it and rarely sucks on the little straps sticking out that tie the bumper to the crib. And whenever we're in his room I remind him to be "soft" in the baby's room- hoping to teach him the new word of being soft and gentle. Once the baby is born and we're still in the hospital, I read that Blaine should bring a blanket home or something with the baby's scent on it to get Jake used to that as well.

I took Jake to the dog park a couple times this week. One time there was a bunch of boys there in baseball uniforms (probably 8-12 years old). They loved Jake and would try to get his attention to play fetch with him. They would throw a frisbee and then Jake would run to go get it and bring it back, but not give it to them. So then the boys would chase Jake and he LOVED it. Once he thought they lost interest in the chase, he would drop the frisbee and the game would start all over again. And he played really well with them.

Then another day we went and there was a mom and her 3 daughters - probably 9, 11, and 13 and they loved Jake as well. (One of them kept calling him "Jacob" though, so he didn't pay attention to her. I thought it was hilarious!) But they would wrap their arms around his neck and hug him and play with him and let him chase them and he was so great. Jake LOVES kids and he loves people, but we're trying to teach him to not jump on them. When he gets really excited, he jumps up, which isn't an attack, but is still not very safe. It also is a problem because he takes stuff off the counter-- for example, today alone he stole the block of cheese and a raw chicken breast!!! (Both of which we got back, but still--wasted) I gave him a little bit of my homemade sweet potato fries last night though and he was addicted. But anyways, back to my baby-

HE IS ALMOST HERE!!! His due date is July 13th and tomorrow I will be 36 weeks!
His crib is up.

We have some diapers and wipes.

My rocker will arrive on Tuesday.

His carseat and stroller will arrive in a week or two.

I've started to slowly put together some items for our hospital bag.

I have a whole list of other things we need to get before he comes. And a whole list of things that need to be done before he gets here-- like deep cleaning the carpets and couches. (Any volunteers?) So all of that is worrisome, but exciting :)

Blaine's First Week of 2nd Year

Well this week was Blaine's first week of his second year of dental school. We're a quarter of the way through! ;) This year is supposedly the hardest out of the four, but the summer semesters aren't so bad though. Most of the days are short and so he's been able to spend time with me and Jake and mow the lawn on a weekday.

Today also marks my 35th week of pregnancy. Only 5 more!! I can't believe it. Blaine is sooooooo excited, but I'm feeling soo nervous about getting everything ready and getting him here safely and smoothly. Nothing new to report except that I feel increasingly hot and uncomfortable. I go lay in bed instead of sit on a couch, and I go stand in the back of church instead of sit in a chair surrounded by people.

Here are some of the things we've done this week:

1. One day I met Blaine over at school for lunch at the Children's Hospital, which was pretty good.

Then we got homemade red velvet ice cream from Kaisers, a historical landmark since 1908. It still looks cute and authentic on the inside. Blaine's been with some friends a couple times after school, but every time he tried to take me, it was closed.
During the winter months they close whenever they feel like it.

2. I also made a craft for my baby about our special song. It was a rough draft, but I'm excited about it.

3. To welcome in summer, we grilled kabobs one night with the only foods that I wanted - chicken and pineapple. Turned out great! We even fed Jake some pineapple for the first time and it seemed like he liked it. He sucked the juice out of the core.
(not a great picture, but better than no picture)

4. We went to the temple Saturday morning. I was scared I'd have to go to the bathroom and have to hold it forever, but I was safe ;) And there was a wedding that day too
It's small and shares a parking lot with a stake center

5. Saturday afternoon we took Jake to a lake about 10 minutes away from our house. He LOVES to swim and it really tires him out. Blaine even hopped in with him.

Lots of red rocks and red sand in Oklahoma, but it was no Lake Powell

We saw a couple catfish carcasses

He's becoming a better swimmer. He'd flap his paws way out of the water on the way to the stick, but on the way back to shore, he'd paddle under water, which was a lot better.

We saw a bunny on the trail back to the truck and Jake wanted to chase it

Then I drove home while the wet boys had to sit on towels in the back
